Sophia's (Twinkle Twinkle) Little Star shaped Baby blanket - Free Pattern

EDIT#1: You may have noticed the title of this post and the name of the blanket has changed a bit. I did this because the little lady to be that I designed this blanket for now has a name and so does the pattern.
EDIT#2: Thanks to a very helpful commenter and fellow blogger loose ends the issue that's been causing people's design to go wonky has been noticed and amended. My apologies for not finding the mistake sooner/myself.

EDIT#2: I had someone ask me in the comments how much yarn I used. I wanted to put it up here.
I used about 1lb of worsted weight yarn for this blanket. 2 strands of worsted are worked together.

If you want to use baby or sport weight use 3 strands together.

By all means, this pattern can be worked with a super bulky yarn that's actually meant to be used on a hook this large

Sophia's (Twinkle Twinkle) Little Star shaped Baby blanket

Corrections: I orriginally posted the pattern with the shell as follows: 2DC, CH1, 2DC. I have changed the CH1 to CH 2. (jan 8/13)

 Notes:
My finished measurements are about 35 inches from point to point.

2 strands of worsted are being worked together with my trusty 10mm (P) hook.

Shell = 2 double crochet, chain 2, 2 double crochet in same stitch or chain space.

SC2TOG (decrease) =  Draw up loop on each of the next 2 stitches, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook

I'm kind of writing it as I go so please let me know if  you find any mistakes.
Here we go!

Round 2: Ch 1, SC in same stitch, *3 DC in next stitch, SC* Repeat around. Slst to first DC.

  1. I love the pattern. Haven't tried it out yet though. I found writing out the pattern as you go to be the best way.

  2. That is one unique pattern. Your choice of colour is perfect too. Perhaps, some readers are starting to knit right now. Thanks :)

  3. I love this star pattern, but I've tried it at least 5 times & just can't seem to get things right. I get to round 5, & the number of spaces just aren't there. I don't seem to have 4 spaces for the 4 dc before & after the shell. I'll try again.... & again.... & again, until I get it!

    1. Thank you for letting me know!
How many stitches are you ending up with?
As stated in the beginning of the post, I wrote the pattern as I went, so my count may be off.
You want to crochet right up to the ch1 of the shell, through the stitches that make up the shell and then do your shell in the ch1 space.
Try to just keep going with the number of stitched you have for the next round or 2, things should even out.
Let me know how many stitches you're ending up with, I'll double check my demo and the original hand written pattern for mistakes in my stitch count.

    2. Thank you for your response. I'm still trying it. I believe it's not your mistake, but mine, in determining exactly where to put a stitch. I think I need to go back to crochet 101!! I've fudged around & I'm now done with round 5 & seem to be on track! I'll take a pic when I'm done so you can see it.

I do love this pattern because the angles are softer looking than others I've seen.

      Thanks again.

    3. Huzzah! I'm glad it worked out for you!

It's very possible that my stitch placement is somewhat unorthodox.. I'm very much a feral crocheter. I'm self taught, often "just wing it" and am prone to experiment. Sometimes that makes it hard for others to follow.

    4. Well, I finished my star afgan for my niece's baby shower!! I'm very happy with how it turned out! I'd love to send a photo, but am not sure how to send it. The obvious 2ch spaces lined up perfectly, but not so great for the downward spaces, but I'm still happy with it!! Thanks for your responses to my questions!

    5. Yay! I'm happy it worked out for you. I know the "inside corners" are a little tricky but once you get the feel of the rythm it's pretty easy to continue on.
I'd love to see a picture! If you have a photo online you can link it in the comments. Or if you like you can email it to me (nadiascrochetcreations@gmail.com) and I'll add it to the page. Thank you so much for coming back and letting me know it worked out for you.

  4. What kind of yarn did you use? Any idea how much yarn you used? It makes it a little easier to shop for it when you have some idea how much you need to buy.
    Thanks so much.

    1. Hi Jane,
I'm so bad for not knowing how much yarn I use. I have a huge stash and just grab random sized balls of yarn at will.
I did however, buy yarn specifically for this project.

The yellow is worsted weight acrylic. I believe it's phentex brand, I bought it at Zellers it came in a big 1lb bag for just under $10.00. It's comparable in thickness in weight to say, red hearts super saver but much softer.

The pink is just some random baby weight that came from my stash, also acylic. Because it was a lighter yarn I used 3 strands of that together.

If I'd used all one color, I would say I probably would have used all 6 balls that came in that pound, or close to it.

So, I guess your short answer is about a pound of yarn in goes into a blanket this size.

If you're using a worsted weight, or something similar, I would buy at least 4(100G or larger) balls. of yarn, if you want to be super sure you have enough maybe even 5.

If you're planning on using a sport or baby weight yarn, you'll want to buy at least 7 balls that are at least 100G or more.

      I hope that helps.

  6. Hi I'm working on this right now & I'm having trouble getting started. At the end of round 2 you say to slip stitch to the 1st DC, is this right? When I start Round 3, it says Ch 3, DC in next st. *Shell in next st, DC, sk SC* & repeat around. Well, when I'm doing this, it sort of works out in the 1st repeat of this, but in the next repeat, the stitches don't add up. I really want to make this blanket, so any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi, yes you slip stitch into the first double crochet to finish off round 2.

I'm not really sure what to tell you a bout the issue you're having. I've double checked the pattern and everything works out fine for me.

If you can please tell me how your stitches are working out I can try my best to help.

I'm going to start another blanket like this today and try to work out some of the complications.

I'm not the best at writing patterns. I'm just sharing the things that I've come up with for my own personal use.

  7. Love the pattern! Thanks for making it available. I'm finding that at the end of each round I'm not able to complete the full number of DC before skipping or sctg. However, even with the fewer stitches on that one section the afghan looks awesome. I added a few extra rows to make it a little larger as I'm using a cotton yarn and it doesn't fill up quite as much as some of the fuller yarns. I also added a row of slip stitches around the outside edge and really enjoy the way it pulled the angles a little sharper. Again, thatnk you form making this available. ~ Abbe

  8. I love the pattern, I am making it in the same colors as you, my question is, does the chain 3 at the beginning of each row counts as the first double crochet ?, that is the way I am doing it and it is going fine, Thanks for sharing. Sonia.

  9. In round 3, move your * to in front of the first "DC in next stitch"..That is how it all evens up. If we follow it as written, there is only 1 DC in between each shell..there needs to be one before, and one after the SC is skipped.
